New Zealand won the toss and elected to bowl as they chase a series clean-sweep against the West Indies in the third Twenty20 international at Mount Maunganui on Monday.

Stand-in captain Mitchell Santner said he wanted to bat second in case overcast conditions resulted in a rain-shortened match.

“We know it’s a good wicket and hopefully we can do a job with the ball,” he said.

“We obviously want to win this game and go 3-0.”

The Black Caps have rested veteran batsman Ross Taylor and pace bowlers Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson, calling up Daryl Mitchell, Scott Kuggeleijn and Hamish Bennett.

West Indies captain Kieron Pollard, who blasted his players after their 72-run loss in the second T20 on Sunday, said he was expecting a better effort.

“A tireless amount of work needs to go into it,” he said.

“We’ve had a couple of discussions and hopefully we can put some things right and execute our plan.”

All-rounder Hayden Walsh replaces Shimron Hetmyer, who has concussion, with Romario Shepherd on for Keemo Paul.

The first of two Tests between the sides begins in Hamilton on Thursday.

Teams:

New Zealand

Martin Guptill, Tim Siefert, Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Mitchell Santner (capt), Scott Kuggeleijn, Hamish Bennett, Lockie Ferguson, Ish Sodhi

West Indies

Umpires: Wayne Knights (NZL), Shaun Haig (NZL)

TV umpire: Chris Brown (NZL)

Match referee: Jeff Crowe (NZL)
