Antonio Conte has revealed Hugo Lloris is in talks with Tottenham over a new contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.
World Cup winner Lloris has been one of Spurs’ most consistent performers in a few turbulent years for the club but progress over fresh terms to extend his time in north London has been slow.
Pierluigi Gollini was brought in on loan during the summer to provide competition between the sticks, but Lloris has kept the Italian firmly at bay with a string of impressive performances, and the club’s supporters are eager for him to be given a new contract.
Speaking ahead of his side’s clash with Watford on New Year’s Day, Conte said: “Hugo is a Tottenham player, he’s the captain. For sure he will talk with the club to try to find a solution.
“I think so [he wants to stay]. I think Hugo wants to stay in his club, he loves the club, he stays well in Tottenham. This could be his opinion.”
Lloris signed for Spurs back in 2012 and is closing in on 400 appearances in all competitions for the club. He is yet to win any silverware with Tottenham, though Conte’s recent arrival has provided fresh optimism for a side that endured embarrassing slumps under Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo.
Tottenham are unbeaten in seven Premier League games under Conte so far and have closed the gap on the top four to five points with two games in hand.
They breezed past Crystal Palace on Boxing Day, but were then disappointingly held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton despite having an extra player on the pitch following Mohammed Salisu’s red card.
