2023 Africa Cup of Nations: Why play second choice goalie Richard Ofori over Ati-Zigi? – William Amamoo slams Chris Hughton

A former Ghana goalkeeper, William Amamoo has slammed Chris Hughton’s decision to start “second choice” Richard Ofori at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The former Premier League manager started the Orlando Pirates goalkeeper who has seen zero minutes of football in all three games at the 2023 AFCON.

The shot-stopper has been dragged to the mud and criticised for his lack of concentration and the mistakes that led to Ghana’s 2-1 shock defeat to Cape Verde and the 2-2 draw in the final game against Mozambique.

With just minutes away from full-time, Richard Ofori conceded an avoidable corner kick which was headed in by Atletico Madrid defender Reinildo as the Os Mambas four back to draw 2-2 with the Black Stars.

After the game, Amamoo has slammed the decision to start Ofori over Ati Zigi despite his experience.

“Ati Zigi had a lot of confidence after the World Cup. He did well during the tournament,” Amamoo, who played between 2008 and 2010 told Mothers FM.

“The defenders know his movement but I don’t get why the coach used his second-choice goalkeeper (Ofori) although he is an experienced goalkeeper.

“Now, the defenders will have to study him again because he was absent from the team for a long time through injuries.

“Ofori is good but he is not used to the current defenders.

“Ati Zizgi knows the defenders at the moment and I don’t get why Ati Zizgi should be changed.

“Ofori should have been given about five friendlies for him to know his defenders before the AFCON,” he added.

Ghana finished their group games at the 3rd spot with just two points after three games.
