Inter Miami were ‘outmatched from start to finish’ vs RBNY

Inter Miami were soundly defeated 4-0 by New York Red Bulls over the weekend, with head coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino claiming his players simply weren’t up for the challenge.

It truly was an appalling performance from the visiting Herons who showed little intent of trying to score a goal Saturday afternoon at Red Bull Arena. Some may point to the harsh rainy conditions Miami were tasked with playing in, but New York had no problem with the heavy rain and managed to score four well-worked goals in front of their supporters.

Martino bluntly stated his side failed to match Red Bulls‘ intensity and desire to win, which is quite the statement to make as the head coach of the team that was seemingly unprepared.

“There is not much to say, except that we were outmatched from start to finish,” he said in Spanish after the game. “When a team enters a game without the desire to win, without spirit, without competing, and the other side just wants to win the game, they are going to win it.”

Of course, like many other MLS coaches that found themselves on the wrong side of a result last weekend, Martino pointed to the fact that he was without important figures like Lionel Messi (for the third straight MLS game), Diego Gomez and Federico Redondo due to injury and the international break.

However, Red Bulls were also missing key players of their own with Emil Forsberg and John Tolkin reporting for international duty with their respective Sweden and USMNT U-23. Martino also noted that his side managed to pick up three points against DC United in the previous weekend without their Argentine superstar but they weren’t able to replicate that performance on Saturday.

“The absence of the best player in the world is important for everyone – but last week with D.C. [United] Leo didn’t play either,” said Martino.

Miami will aim to bounce back and claim three points at home at Chase Stadium when they square off with the struggling NYCFC this Saturday.
