Thibaut Courtois undergoes surgery on latest knee injury

Real Madrid have confirmed goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has undergone successful surgery on his latest knee injury.

The Belgian suffered an ACL tear in his left knee during pre-season and spent eight months on the sidelines, but was back in training earlier this month with a view to returning after the March international break.

However, he suffered an injury to his right knee during training and is now back on the sidelines after undergoing surgery.

“Our player Thibaut Courtois underwent successful surgery today for a tear in the internal meniscus of his right knee under the supervision of the Real Madrid Medical Services,” a club statement read.

“Courtois will begin his recovery process in the coming days.”

Reports suggest Courtois will be out of action for a further two months, almost certainly ruling out a return this season. Madrid’s final game of the La Liga campaign is scheduled for 26May against Real Betis.

“Thank you all for your messages,” Courtois wrote on social media. “Sad for an injury that is only a small setback that will make me come back much stronger. Feeling your support makes me cope much better.”

In more positive news for Madrid, fellow injured star Eder Militao inched one step closer to his return with an appearance in a behind-closed-doors friendly against the Castilla.

Militao, who suffered an ACL injury of his own in the first game of the season, made it through the game without any pain or complications and will continue to step up his recovery ahead of a potential return next month.
