England vs Iceland: Preview, predictions and lineups

England welcome Iceland to Wembley Stadium on Friday night in their final game before the start of Euro 2024.

Gareth Southgate’s side struggled to move through the gears on Tyneside on Monday but an improved second-half performance aided by the efficient displays of substitutes Adam Wharton and Jack Grealish saw England run out 3-0 victors against a stubborn Bosnia and Herzegovina side.

The Three Lions’ preparations for the Euros will continue after Friday’s game, but this will be their last fixture before they take on Serbia on 16 June. The final deadline for Southgate to submit his 26-player squad also happens to be Friday.

England’s footballing history with Iceland is defined by their infamous last-16 duel at Euro 2016 when the minnows prevailed in what was the bleakest night in the Three Lions’ modern history.

England have since beaten Iceland twice in the UEFA Nations League, with Friday’s duel being their first meeting in four years.

Here’s 90min’s preview of Friday’s friendly at Wembley.

Southgate will announce his final 26-player squad for the tournament on Saturday and the England boss is expected to name close to his strongest XI on Friday.

The likes of Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham could all come into the England team. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s stellar performance on Monday may convince Southgate to retain him in midfield, while Kyle Walker is set to replace Ezri Konsa at right-back.

Harry Maguire remains an injury doubt.

England predicted lineup vs Iceland (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Walker. Stones, Guehi, Gomez; Alexander-Arnold, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Foden; Kane.

Iceland confirmed in the week Orri Steinn Oskarsson has withdrawn from the squad to face England through injury and will be replaced by Sevar Atli Magnusson. Willum Por Willumsson is also out of action.

Andri Gudjohnsen, son of former Chelsea striker Eidur, could start up top for the visitors on Friday alongside Genoa star Albert Gudmundsson.

Iceland predicted lineup vs England (4-4-2): Valdimarsson; Porhallsson, Bjarnason, Gretarsson, Finnsson; E. Gudmundsson, Traustason, Pordason, Ingason; A. Gudmundsson, Gudjohnsen.

England were beaten for the first time in 21 games at Wembley in March, although Iceland are highly unlikely to pose the threat of Brazil on Friday.

These are fixtures the Three Lions typically saunter in. They’ve made a habit of brushing past inferior opponents on home soil and, given there are players vying for their spots in Southgate’s 26-player squad, expect the hosts to be extra competitive in this one.

England should coast to a comfortable victory ahead of Euro 2024.

Prediction: England 4-0 Iceland
