Mali game demanded we play five defenders – Ghana coach Otto Addo

Ghana head coach, Otto Addo, has disclosed that he played five defenders against Mali because the game demanded he played in that system on Thursday in their third 2026 World Cup qualifier.

Ghana came from behind to claim all the vital three points with a 2-1 win in Bamako and move second in Group I of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Mali were favourites in the game but the Black Stars played above themselves to win the game at a very hostile and hot 26th March Stadium.

Speaking after the game, Otto Addo was asked why he chose to go with that 3-4-3 formation and he said the demands of the Malians needed that because of how fast they are.

“Every game has different demands and for this game I chose this system but in the next game maybe I’ll choose something else, I don’t know, I don’t know yet.

“I can’t say I will play the same. Maybe I will do so if I think this will be the right thing but maybe not, I don’t know.”
